Motor Insurance FAQ

Comprehensive cover protects you from claims made for accidental damage to your own car as well as claims by Third Parties, including passengers for personal injuries or damage to property. You are also protected in the event of damage to or loss of your car by fire, theft or attempted theft.

Third Party Fire and Theft cover protects you from claims made by Third Parties, including passengers for personal injuries or damage to their property. You are also protected in the event of damage to or loss of your car by fire, theft or attempted theft.

Third Party only protects you from claims made by Third Parties, including passengers for personal injuries or damage to their property.

Q: Is open driving cover available?
A: Yes- In some cases- Please ask if you want this on your policy/quote

Will you quote me if I have:

Q: A Provisional licence?
A: Yes  – However there is a restricted market for this risk type.

Q: An international driving licence?
A: Clients must currently hold a current Provisional Irish Licence or a Full Irish or EC Driving Licence only

Q: No driving experience or Named Driving Experience?
A: Yes.

Q: Penalty points?
A: Yes, provided you have no more than 4 Penalty Points on your current driving licence

Q: Convictions?
A: No, you must not have been convicted of any offences of any nature and have no convictions pending

Q: How can I pay for the premium?
* By credit card or laser card at no extra charge
* By cheque, bank draft or postal order made payable to Fitzgerald Insurances at no extra charge
* Direct Debit is offered by some Insurers – Please ask if you want this facility.

Q: What is the excess on my Insurance policy?
A: This is the amount that the policyholder must pay towards a claim. This amount varies from policy to policy,this amount will be clearly stated on your policy schedule, however should  you have any queries please ask us and we will gladly advise you on the policy excess relevant to your policy / quote.

Q: Is Breakdown assistance included  on all policies?
A: No- This is not standard on all policies. Please ask our representative to include this cover in your quotation if you require this cover.

Q: What if I am involved in an accident/claim?

A: Notify Fitzgerald Insurances as soon as possible. DO NOT ADMIT LIABITY regardless of circumstances. We will be happy to assist you in handling your claim.

Q: What if I want to cancel my policy?
A: All cancellation instructions must be submitted to Fitzgerald Insurances in writing. If the insurance certificate and disc have been issued, these must also be returned before your policy can be cancelled. If you cancel your motor insurance policy during the first year of insurance, the Insurer’s short period rates will apply for the time the policy has been in force. The short period rates are as follows:

1st month    20%
2nd month    30%
3rd month    40%
4th month    50%
5th month    60%
6th month    70%
7th month    80%
8th month    90%
9 months plus    100%

Cooling-Off Period
You have the right to withdraw from your policy, within 14 days from the inception date of your policy or the date you receive your policy documents, whichever is later. To withdraw from a policy within the cooling off period, you need to send us a request in writing inclusive of your policy number and return (if received) your Certificate of Insurance and Disc. Should you exercise your right to withdraw, it will mean no policy was ever put in place and provided that you have not made a claim, we will refund you any premium paid in full. If you have used the policy and should you exercise your right to withdraw, provided that you have not made a claim, we will only charge you for time on cover. Please note that our set up fee is non refundable if you choose to withdraw from the policy within the cooling-off period.
